Blippar: Face recognition for everyone

Blippar: Face recognition for everyone

This situation may have already happened to you: you are in town and you see a person you seem to know but can not tell who it is. The Blippar application will help you.

The solution comes from the UK and is called Blippar. This is a new application that uses facial recognition to give you all the information you are looking for on a person, starting with his or her first and last name.

An application to know everything about everyone

Blippar simply works thanks to the camera of your phone: point it at the person whose identity you want and launch the app, it will take care of the rest. If the person is in the database of Blippar, it will give you the answer you are looking for ... And you will be able to say on the social networks having crossed this or that star.

When it was launched in the United Kingdom on Monday 5 December 2016, Blippar already incorporated some 70 000 profiles of well-known personalities, from show-biz stars to politicians. But the application has already planned the sequence of events: everyone can, if he wants to, insert his own data and his own photo so that he can be recognized on the street. Not surprisingly, privacy advocates are already worried about the abuses that such an application may have in the hands of anyone.

The end of privacy?

With Blippar, in short, it will be enough to point the camera to a stranger in the street and to have all its data. This could be the end of anonymity in real life and, most importantly, the end of the privacy of everyone. Although the application is probably not as powerful as the software used by the intelligence services, Blippar has something to raise.

The idea of facial recognition within everyone's reach had already raised questions for the Google Glass project, which has since been abandoned. The Mountain View firm then banned any such application to protect the privacy of users and, above all, avoid potential lawsuits.
