Your unofficial Apple charger is probably dangerous, according to a study

If you have an unofficial Apple charger, there is a good chance that it will be dangerous. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI), a British organization responsible for, among other things, consumer protection, which indicates that 99% of the shippers tested represent a danger.

The CTSI bought 400 counterfeit shippers for various Apple products online, and tested them according to various criteria. According to his findings, only 3 shippers passed the safety tests successfully, leaving the other 397 as presenting a potential risk to the safety of the users. Problems encountered include insufficient insulation, exposed cables or exposed electrical parts, which can cause short circuits and fires. More severe, the 397 loaders failing would present serious risks of electrocution in case of overvoltage.

If the 400 chargers purchased online are almost all failing, the result is only slightly more reassuring about the proximity sale. The study tested nearly 3,000 unofficial shoppers bought in both new and used British shops and found that about 15% of shippers were non-compliant, with a peak at 27% For those bought only in the city of London.

The CTSI therefore recommends buying a new charger only from a trusted dealer, and always inquire about the origin of a charger before plugging it in at home.
