A1: the new standard for SD cards

A1: the new standard for SD cards

The A1 standard decided by the organization that establishes memory card standards, SD Association, relates to the application performance of SD storage cards and should allow users of tablets and smartphones to "better" choose the device most suited to Store and run their applications.

Indeed, this new standard that will have to be adopted by the manufacturers of memory cards in the coming months, it is necessary to add the logo "A1 - App performance" on the label of the SD card, and this in apparent way when:

  • The sequential write speed is at least 10 MB / s (this is particularly the case for Class 10 and UHS-I cards)
  • Performance reaches a minimum of 1500 IOPS (random read / write operations per second) and more than 500 write IOPS.

With an increasing number of mobile devices supporting external storage, and in particular terminals running on Android, the SD Association's initiative is rather well received, although for many users the ideal would be a review Logos that are beginning to be "too many".

Indeed, this new classification A1 extends the list of 11 standards currently recognized by the SDA:

  • Speed Class 2, Speed Class 4, Speed Class 6, Speed Class 10;
  • Video Speed Class 6, Video Speed Class 10, Video Speed Class 30, Video Speed Class 60, Video Speed Class 90;
  • UHS Speed Class 1, UHS Speed Class 3.
