No Wifi, no Bluetooth but with a spyware: here is the tablet of North Korea!

No Wifi, no Bluetooth but with a spyware: here is the tablet of North Korea!

The Chaos Communication Congress is currently taking place in Hamburg and a group of researchers has presented the Woolim, a tablet modified by the North Korean government. The device limits access to the media, monitors its users and also serves as a platform to relay the propaganda of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The tablet looks like a standard device, it is manufactured by the Chinese manufacturer Hoozo. Before marketing, the authorities removed some of its components such as WiFi and Bluetooth. Then, they installed specific programs for monitoring.

The government has installed its own software on Woolim

The device comes with several propaganda texts. It can connect to the North Korean Internet network, access local television programs and offer several educational applications. Magnanimous government, let the children play Angry Birds through a redesigned version. Obviously, the user can not open any file, HMTL documents and even audio and video sources. The tablet will only allow files that were previously installed or generated.

When the owner launches an application, Woolim automatically performs a screenshot. You can watch it on another device, but you can not delete it. Given that Hoozo is selling this tablet between 160 and 200 euros in China, its price could be higher in North Korea. Defect, only a small wealthy category of the population could buy it.

Last year, Florian Grunow and Niklaus Schiess shared the results of their investigations into RedStar OS, an operating system designed by the North Korean regime from Linux. It was after this intervention that they received Woolim from a South Korean NGO in order to make it known to the "free world".
