Some pedestrians are so busy with applications on their smartphones that they forget the world around them. And traffic lights sometimes go into the background, but this lack of attention can lead to accidents.
To minimize the risks, the Netherlands is currently experimenting with a device to warn those who have a little too much eyes on their screens.
Light Line
This is how the small municipality of Bodegraven had red and green light bars that synchronized with traffic lights. These devices are fixed to the ground and come from the company HIG Traffic Systems which baptized them + Lichtlijn or luminous line. For now, they are placed in the intersections near the schools.
But the initiative is not unanimous. Dutch road safety even thinks that the measure is "a way of encouraging bad behavior". In any case, this kind of signage is already part of the daily life of the inhabitants of Ausburg in Germany since April 2016. A girl of 15 years was crushed by a tram while she consulted his telephone.
