Ford is developing a 4G LTE device that can be plugged into the ODB II port, enabling older vehicle models to be connected.
The SmartLink is compatible, for the moment, with the Ford cars released between 2010 and 2016, which are not equipped with modem. This gadget offers a Wifi connection that can accommodate up to 8 devices and offers several services such as remote start, locking and unlocking via smartphone, vehicle location and alerts when the speed limit is exceeded.
"Smartlink will surprise and amaze the owners of recent Ford models with today's hottest connectivity features," said Stephen Odell, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, Sales and Service at Ford.
A partnership with Delphi Automotive and Verizon Wireless
Ford partnered with Verizon Wireless and Delphi Automotive to implement this key and its development, including design, testing and manufacturing, which took two years. For the time being this service is intended only in the United States.
"From safety to performance, we have carried out extensive testing and made a number of improvements to ensure that the Ford Smartlink improves the experience of our customers," said Technical Director of the firm, Raj Nair .
