In South Korea the government wants to legislate ... on smartphone batteries

After the fiasco of Samsung with the battery of the Galaxy Note 7 which ignited unexpectedly, the mark LG had developed a special cooling system to avoid the overheating, of which it will equip its next smartphone LG G6. And it is now the turn of the South Korean state to take action through its Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).

New regulations

Samsung recently released the results of its investigation into the Galaxy Note 7. And it came out that the battery was involved. It is therefore not surprising that the South Korean Ministry announced on Monday the strengthening of security requirements on lithium-ion batteries.

The inspection will be carried out more regularly and the ministry will undertake a thorough check throughout the production process. It should be said that manufacturers of smartphones like LG and Samsung have an international reach and remain important for the South Korean economy.

The MOTIE also advocates a more effective recall system, as the Galaxy Note 7 has been more than complicated and frustrating for the brand's customers. The new regulations should be effective by October and will have a validity of 5 years.
