Almost all Chromebooks and Chromeboxes will become Android compatible in the year 2017. Good news for the repository of these machines.
In May 2016, Google announced support for Android applications on some Chromebooks. Machines with OS web and Cloud Chrome OS.
The firm is now accelerating and promises a more complete support for Android applications on Chrome OS machines. "All Chromebooks launched in 2017 [...] will work with Android applications," reads this web page.
But also many existing devices. To date, only the Asus Chromebook Flip, Asus Chromebook R11 and Google Chromebook Pixel 2015 accept Android titles. Tomorrow, it will be the same with a wide selection of offers, including machines offered by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba. Note that the Chromeboxes are not forgotten and should also accept Android applications. Even the Chromebit key from Asus will be entitled to this treatment.
Pending the Chrome OS / Android merger
With this contribution, Chrome OS + Android devices will be able to access desktop applications, now massively deployed in web and cloud mode, as well as the 2.7 billion mobile applications Android (source AppBrain).
The merger between the two OSs could be proposed this year, in the form of the Andromeda project
