This is the big trend in recent months in terms of photos on the Internet. Whether Google, Amazon or Facebook, the main online services are now able to analyze photos and what they contain to better sort them, but also to better target you with advertising. Google Photos makes it possible to search photos according to what they contain since May 2015, when Amazon launched last December or Facebook in April 2016.
Particularity of the image recognition system of Facebook, the different elements displayed in a photo are semi-public. They are present directly in the source code of the page and not only in the tags associated with a photo in metadata. It is thus possible to know these "tags" provided you know how to read a code in HTML, or using a screen reader for the visually impaired. However, to simplify reading these labels, a developer had the idea to create an extension for the Google Chrome browser.
On Github, Adam Geitgey has been offering for a few days a Chrome extension to highlight the tags associated with a Facebook photo. The different terms are thus visible directly in the layout of the social network, in a box at the top right of the photo. "I think many internet users do not realize the amount of information that is regularly extracted from photographs. Facebook (and Google, Apple, Amazon, etc.) can easily determine from your photos whether you have a dog, whether you are collecting cameras, playing golf, having children, The sunglasses, "he explains. This extension aims to make everyone aware of the knowledge that Facebook can access by simply hosting your photos on its social network.
As our colleagues from NextINpact point out, "Facebook seems more prolix on outdoor scenes or when it notices food and drinks." The extension can be installed directly from the Github site provided it has enabled the developer mode of its Chrome browser and Facebook is configured in English.
