IOS 11: what's new

IOS 11: what's new‬‏

Towards a Smarter iPhone

This will be the next generation iPhone operating system. IOS 11 was presented by Apple at the WWDC 2017. On the menu, many application updates and some new features for the iPad.

The best additions include the integration of Apple Pay into Messages, a Siri that looks much more natural and works with other applications, and better interaction between iOS devices.

Currently, the first beta version of iOS 11 is available. However, it will be necessary to wait until the fall to update its devices with the final version of iOS 11.

Paying your contacts with Apple Pay

With iOS 11, Apple will make the payment between close ones a lot easier. Apple Pay will allow its users to send funds to their contacts directly from the Messages application. When a contact will ask for money, the Quick Type keyboard can be transformed into a payment terminal with an Apple Pay button. You choose the amount and then you pay.

Siri plays well with Apps, translates language and sounds more human

Siri has been on the iPhone for years, but it only worked with Apple applications. It is only now that it opens to third-party applications, for example Evernote in which Siri can create a note or edit another. With the barrier open, it is hoped that the developers will update their applications to work with Siri, which would give a great impulse to this wizard.

To re-launch it, Apple also capitalizes on an integrated translation tool. Currently, when asked, Siri says, "I'm afraid I can not provide you with a translation." In iOS 11, this will no longer be the case. Siri will be polyglot, write the translation, but above all will say it out loud, enough to facilitate exchanges between strangers.

Finally, Siri also changed his phrasing. Much more natural, it has benefited from the addition of several levels of intonation. An improvement that Apple introduced by having Siri say the word "sunny" in three different ways.

Posts wins better synchronization

If you are writing SMS or iMessage on several of your Apple devices, you may have not found one of your messages on your iPad, Mac or iPhone. This is a synchronization issue. Apple will fix it in iOS 11. To do this, all messages will automatically be copied to a new device once your iCloud account is filled in. In the same way, when you delete a message from your iPhone, for example, it will also be deleted on your iPad or Mac.

IOS 11 makes the iPhone a better companion

Apple has also reworked Plans. We finally have a tracking system, a very convenient option on the highway and four lanes, already integrated into Google Maps for a long time. Another novelty is the appearance of speed limits in real time, which help the driver to adapt his pace.

Another innovative feature: "Do Not Disturb While Driving" is "Do not disturb while driving. A mode that is based on Bluetooth, Wi-fi and motion via the Doppler effect. Considering these settings, the iPhone detects that the user is driving and automatically switches to this mode. The notifications are then deactivated, just like the calls and the screen is darkened. Incoming calls are automatically notified that the user is driving.

Out of the vehicle, Plans gain in precision and allow guidance inside large buildings, such as airports and shopping centers.

IOS is finally optimized for the iPad

IPad owners should love iOS 11. It finally adapts to the needs of tablets and makes using their large screens more comfortable.

The new features include a dock that macOS users will have no trouble recognizing, as well as a Spaces view. It displays at the same time the thumbnails of all the screens launched on the iPad, whether it is just one application or several anchored on the same space.

If iOS allows for some time to display two applications side-by-side, Apple adds a drag-and-drop option that should facilitate content transfer. Texts, images and URLs can be manipulated.

Finally, the keyboard of the iPad has been reviewed. It is no longer necessary to juggle between several screens, all secondary keys are displayed on the basic keyboard. To access it, simply press the desired key and slide its finger down to confirm its secondary character.

An integrated file manager

Although this is not a top-level file manager, like on Android, the new Apple Files application is welcome.

It not only displays files on the iPad, it also supports third-party storage services like Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive. Interaction with other applications is required since drag-and-drop makes it easy to move documents to Mail or Messages or to an editing application such as iMovie.

Do more with the Control Center and 3D Touch

IOS 11 remembers the Control Center. Organized into icons, it looks like a great hopscotch. Nevertheless, it is fully customizable and now holds on a single page. Shortcuts can be added or deleted to maximize its effectiveness. 3D Touch-enabled devices will have access to many more options on the same space.

ARKit improves games and applications in augmented reality

IOS 11 wins a new framework: ARKit. In the hands of developers, this set of tools allows them to easily create augmented reality experiences. They have access to all the sensors of the iPhone. The goal is to better integrate augmented reality into applications and give more natural interactions of virtual elements with the actual set.

Apple thus pays its project of AR, and joins Microsft (Hololens) and Google (Tango) on this subject. Its advantages: it does not require any additional accessories (unlike Hololens) and will be optimized for the entire fleet of Apple devices (unlike Tango).

Apple Music wins a social part

One of the main reasons why Spotify is the leader in the music streaming market is that it allows the user to share his playlists and favorite music with his friends. Apple takes the same turn with iOS 11. Apple Music allows to spread its activity and share its playlists with other users.

Live photos get rich

Rather than retaining its format of filmed photos, Apple has chosen to enrich the concept with an editing mode. Once the scene is captured, it is now possible to choose between three modifications: one that replays the scene at infinity, another that plays it once in the place and then a second in reverse, and finally the last one Which simulates a long exposure.
Another addition to the Photos application is the ability to extract a snapshot of a passage from a Live photo.

Integrated QR code reader

This is a novelty that has been waiting. In its eleventh version, iOS finally integrates a reader of QR codes in native. This is not an additional application. The player has been associated with the camera. If the option is enabled in iOS settings (Settings> Camera> QR Code Scanner), the QR code will be automatically played back. To see its performance, but it seems that the knell has sounded for third-party applications until then alone on board.

Write to Siri, it's possible

It's probably happened to iOS users to need Siri, but not to speak. Meeting, waiting room or other, there are many places where it is fashionable to be discreet. IOS 11 releases its voice assistant. With him, he is no longer confined to speech. The user can now write to him rather than dictate his instructions. An addition that Apple did not mention in its conference at the WWDC, but that is present in the first beta of iOS 11.

Apple helps you recover from storage

Since the first iPhone, users regularly complain about not having enough storage space. Apple having chosen to dispense with microSD port, it is necessary to regularly clean. IOS 11 has a menu that should facilitate this task. Handling recommendations are given. Migrate your photos to iCloud or its messages or delete unused applications while retaining their data. A good idea to optimize its storage.

The Dark Mode finally operational

It was expected on iOS 10, it is finally iOS 11 that inaugurates the dark mode. After the Night Shift that turns yellow the display, this mode will allow to blacken it completely. Its system uses an intelligent color inversion. If white becomes black, the mode preserves the hues of images and other multimedia contents. Named "Smart Reverse", this option is found in General> Accessibility> Fit Display. Note that there are still some errors in the beta. For example, the frame of the camera application changes to white when it should remain black.
