The Internet Archive unveils GIF search engine

As part of its twentieth anniversary, the Internet Archive launched the GifCities to facilitate access to GIF that adorned Geocities. Besides images, the user may also access the pages offered by the hosting site.
For information, the collection contains 4,500,000 1,600,000 motion pictures which are unique pictures. To improve the relevance of results, programmers combined the names of files with a text directory path.



Geocities, a former stronghold of the web

Geocities has played a key role in the development of web and GifCities project allows us to understand its importance. Launched in 1994, the hosting site was acquired by Yahoo in 1999. With it, users could create their personal website. According to available information, the platform has hosted more than 38 million pages and has even figured in third place among the most visited web sites. When Yahoo announced its closure, ten years after buying it, the Internet Archive has undertaken to speed archiving content.
