After a series of tests, Domino's Pizza carried out its first real commercial delivery of pizza per drone. The inauguration of the new delivery service took place in New Zealand on Wednesday 16 November. The flight was previously submitted and validated by the civil aviation authorities of the country.
The international food chain said carton was deposited at 11:09 (local time) at a human customer, at its address in Whangaparaoa, on the northern outskirts of Auckland. The latter had ordered two pizzas, one with chicken peri-peri and the other with chicken and cranberry.
A partnership between Domino's and Flirtey
To give life to this somewhat atypical project, Domino's partnered with Flirtey, a startup specializing in drone transport. For this inaugural flight, a team of drone experts supervised by a pilot were called to remotely control the autonomous air vehicle using GPS navigation.
Persevering, the chain of pizzerias intends to continue its experimentation, using the technology drone to bring their pizzas to other New Zealand customers in the coming days. But that's not all, as Domino's trials are also underway on six other markets namely Australia, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Japan and Germany.
Don Meij, CEO of Domino's, is nevertheless reassuring for those who fear for their jobs: "We hope that DRU Drone de Flirtey is an asset for our delivery fleet. It will create jobs. As we grow, we will recruit and expand our teams with specialized drones management profiles. "
