With Mate 9, Huawei out the big guns to dethrone the Apple iPhone

Huawei still up a notch in the high-end smartphones by launching Mate 9, available in two versions. While the basic model is sold 100 euros more expensive than the previous version, the one designed by Porsche Design highs. Here is offered by these new devices that come into direct competition with the iPhone 7 and the Samsung Galaxy.

This is not one, but two models of its latest high-end smartphone, Huawei has just introduced with great fanfare in Munich. On one hand, the Mate 9 Porsche Design and the other Mate 9 short. Main difference between the two? 700 euros! A price gap that the brand justifies its ambitions on the smartphone market: show that it knows how to innovate and make exceptional while responding to consumer needs in terms of performance, range and photo. With sometimes surprising arguments.

Innovations better than Apple and Samsung
Who knew that a Chinese automaker would have the temerity to release a more expensive model than the iPhone 7 Plus (1129 euros for its 256 GB version Jet Black color)! It is done with the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Edition. The new flagship of the Chinese is a UFO. Not because of its technical details, but especially its price: 1395 euros!

Because on the bottom, it differs from Mate 9 "general public" (699 euros) on a few points. First design, imagined - as the name suggests - with the German manufacturer of fine sports cars (like ZTE did with BMW on his Axon 7), then a bit more memory and capacity storage (respectively 6 GB and 256 GB, 4 against and 64GB) and finally, a beautiful screen (5.5 inch curved quad HD (2560 x 1440 px) against an AMOLED 5.9 inch Full HD). Equipped of a key intelligent façade that serves both fingerprint sensor and fast navigation pad, it is also one of the few to be compatible with the virtual reality mask of Google, the Daydream (including the release in France is not yet known).

"This is an image product" confides Vincent Vantilcke, marketing director of Huawei France. In other words, a showcase smartphone to prove that the monopoly of innovation is not in the hands of Apple and Samsung. "Huawei's strategy is in the upmarket," says Vincent Vantilcke. And the manufacturer's ambitions seem limitless: "Our goal is to surpass Apple in smartphones in the next two years by focusing on innovation," said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, at the launch of both products. The group would increase from third to second in the manufacturers of smartphones, behind Samsung.

Even more accurate photos, always with Leica

After a first collaboration on P9, Huawei and Leica continue their partnership in equipping the two versions of Mate 9 a double dorsal image sensor (8MP and front for selfies). This second generation is divided into a first monochrome sensor of 20 megapixels associated with a second 12MP and promises a better level of detail, more natural colors and improved black & white photographs. Equipped with a stabilizer and a zoom x 2, 9 Mate also allows shooting in 4K.

A faster and smoother experience

Huawei is one of the few manufacturers to develop itself processors of its smartphones, like Apple with its "A" that equip the iPhone and Samsung with its Exynos,. Advantages of these components "homemade": maximizing the performance of devices with a faster and more fluid navigation.

9 The Mate is the first model of the brand to incorporate the latest processor house: Kirin 960, which would be "the most powerful in the world" according to Huawei, that tests will come confirm. According to the manufacturer, it removes the lag time when launching applications or displaying the gallery, including if we undertake several things at once.

Coupled with a Mali GPU G71 and a 4GB RAM for Mate 9 "general public" and 6 GB for the Mate 9 Porsche Design promises a 15% reduction in power consumption of the device, a improvement of 180% of its overall performance and ... 400% of its graphics performance compared to its predecessor, the Kirin 950, which team including Huawei P9.

An autonomy that crushes competition

With its generous 4000 mAh battery, the Mate 9 is supposed to spray the autonomy of 7 iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S7: two days with a single charge. The device also embeds the new quick charge technology "SuperCharge" of the firm that promises a 58% recharge in 30 minutes, "risk of explosion" quipped Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group. A challenge to Samsung and industrial disaster that is living the manufacturer after the explosions of its Note 7.

A delayed obsolescence

Argument particularly surprising coming from a manufacturer of smartphones: the Mate 9 is designed to last much longer than competitive models. Huawei promises thus buyers best running terminal 18 months after the purchase, 80% of its capacity more precisely, through the optimization of device resources.

This does not mean that it will be replaced after half a year of use, fortunately. Still, given that 70% of high-end smartphones are sold by operators, together with an often package with 24-month commitment, the manufacturer does not take too much risk to come forward on the issue.

The Mate 9 will be also on sale from November 15 in the operators and multibrand stores like Fnac, Darty, etc.
