The Internet search engine number one announces that all Map Maker features have been transferred from the main Google Maps application to the Local Guides program, removing access to free Google Drive storage and beta features from community-organized users, And more specifically the ability to retouch data from local Google Maps.
It is possible that this decision is related to the somewhat embarrassing situation encountered by Google in 2015 after a user drew an Android robot urinating on an Apple logo in Google Maps. The image had time to circle the web before being spotted and quickly removed by the Mountain View firm. This was followed by temporary disabling of the tool to improve submissions for moderation of the Map Maker.
By transferring these functionalities to the Local Guides program, the company hopes to be able to better moderate the improvement proposals and thus provide users with more relevant information.
