The US Patent and Trademark Office confirms this: Patent No. 9.504.170 concerning a "flexible display device" by Apple describes an iPhone equipped with a full display device with a foldable screen . At first glance, the concept is close to that of the clamshell cell phone proposed by Motorola in the 1990s.
Two components are important in this invention: the DELo screen on the one hand and the nickel-titanium alloy support called Nitinol on the other. In terms of structure, it is composed of two sectioned chassis, in which are integrated components typical of smartphones. The rotation or interaction between the two chassis is ensured by a shaft hinge. And, the connection of the two poles is guaranteed by a flexible printed circuit board.
The screen is fixed on both sections of the phone, Apple specifies that it could integrate other hardware adapted to different configurations of fold to alleviate the stress in the sensitive components of the screen. Further details are provided concerning the design of the two hinges, the cover glass, the angle of view and the various alternatives in the patent.
If in the future, the invention can affect other products such as MacBook, Apple could release an iPhone model with a flexible screen in 2017, according to speculation.
The filing of this Apple foldable Apple Patent by its inventors Fletcher R. Rothkopf and Andrew J. Janis and Teodor Dabov, dates back to July 2014.
