MoVR: a system to use any wireless VR headset

MoVR: a system to use any wireless VR headset

Until now, there were two types of VR headphones: headphones connected to a smartphone or those like HTC Vive and Oculus Rift that are connected to the PC via a cable. Henceforth, another alternative seems to be emerging in the midst of virtual reality. MIT scientists have created a new method called MoVR that provides access to wireless RV.

This new communication system makes it possible to use any wireless VR headset. The MoVR system relies on millimeter waves. It uses these waves to establish a fast communication between the headset and the computer. The speed at which data is transmitted is much higher than current communications systems such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

However, this communication can only be made if the space is clear between the PC and the helmet, which is its main disadvantage. Scientists would already be working on the problem using programmable mirrors that can direct the signal to the helmet even when moving.

For now, MoVR is still in the prototype stage but it could prove very useful in the near future.
