Las Vegas kinetic sidewalks use your feet

Las Vegas kinetic sidewalks use your feet

Sparkling lights, sunny days, thousands of pedestrians ... Las Vegas is the ideal city to test the new street lighting technology Smart Streetlight, developed by the New York startup EnGoPlanet.

Concretely, it is a system comprising LED streetlights powered by both solar energy and kinetic pavers - integrated into sidewalks - which transform pedestrian steps into energy.

By default, the system consumes electricity generated by curved photovoltaic panels. The kinetic paving stones that store the energy generated by the back and forth on the pavement ensure a reserve of energy if the sky is covered during the day. Each block is equipped with 3 micro-generators and produces 4 to 8 watts per step, depending on the pressure exerted.

Linked to a battery, Smart Streetlight not only illuminates the Boulder Plaza in downtown Las Vegas, but can also power security cameras, WiFi hotspots or portable charging stations. With the installation, municipal workers can also check the power and battery levels, or change the color of LED lights for special events. Finally, this technology integrates sensors to monitor the environment and air quality, as well as calculation tools that can be very useful for statisticians.

In a press release, EnGoPlanet explains that the device is completely autonomous and does not require any connection to the network.
