Pico Neo VR: the virtual reality helmet

The advantage of VR helmets for smartphones is to be able to enjoy the experience without being connected to a computer by disturbing cables. This usually works with a module in which the smartphone slips to transform the display. But this is also what makes the device very heavy.

To remedy this, the Chinese company Pico VR has developed Neo, a standalone VR headset running Android, with a resolution of 1200x1080 pixels, a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a field of view at 102 degrees.

His particuliarity ? It works without a smartphone. For this, Pico designers created a controller equipped with all the hardware needed to power the dedicated software: SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space expandable by microSD card and 5000 mAh battery. Once the joystick connected to the headset, one can appreciate the virtual reality experience, sitting or standing and most importantly, without the inconvenient weight of the smartphone on the face.

The Pico Neo VR was officially introduced in April. At the Virtual Reality Developer Conference in San Francisco, held on November 2 and 3, a "developer" version was available to the public. However, the idea is not free from disadvantages, starting with the threads. Today wireless virtual reality is the ultimate goal of manufacturers, like concepts like Santa Cruz de Oculus. Another characteristic of Pico Neo is the obligation to use an additional gaming device that you do not necessarily want to take anywhere with you.

Moreover, the Pico VR headset uses a customized version of Android that leaves doubts about the source of compatible games and VR experiences. Finally, the price of the Pico Neo is estimated at about $ 550 or $ 300 for the headset alone, if you want to connect it to a computer.
