With Ektra smartphone, Kodak opts for nostalgia

With Ektra smartphone, Kodak opts for nostalgia

Kodak, the resurrection. The camera manufacturer who missed the digital shift and penalty since to ascend the slope trying to break into smartphones by leveraging its history in the photo. The company has announced Wednesday the launch of Ektra, its second smartphone, the name of one of his legendary cameras released in the 1940s.

A design meant to remind Kodak history. Everything in the design reminds smartphone camera of yesteryear. From the back faux leather to plastic imitation metal slices through the photo sensor protruding from the shell of the mobile.

The focus on the photo. Photo hand grip has been integrated into the casing of the smartphone to facilitate the handling of the device in portrait mode. Similarly, a trigger is present on the top slice of the mobile. Many arguments that highlights Kodak to entice budding photographers. Problem with testing conducted by American journalists link many shortcomings, especially in the final rendering of images.

A mid-range smartphone. For the rest, the Ektra Kodak provides technical characteristics worthy of a mid-range smartphone. We find such a Full HD 5-inch screen, a MediaTek processor and 3GB of RAM. Everything should be marketed in France for 499 euros from December.

An alliance with a smartphone specialist. But if the smartphone is sold under the Kodak brand, the camera manufacturer is actually nothing to do with its construction. To offer this mobile, the photo specialist has partnered with the British company that designs and manufactures Bullitt smartphones for other companies. The company especially working with CAT to build its ultra-fast mobile or Land Rover. And if this mobile marks another attempt to diversify from Kodak, this is however not the first smartphone in the US business.

A first failed attempt. Last January, at CES in Las Vegas, Kodak had indeed presented a first smartphone, the IM5, already built in partnership with Bullitt and had not really convinced market observers. With this second model, more clearly focused on the photo, Kodak therefore hope - finally - meet the needs of amateur photographers smartphones.
