Germany unveils a zero CO2 emission train

Germany will use the Coradia iLint, ecological passenger train which is distinguished by the absence of CO2 emissions. Designed by Alstom, this vehicle uses lithium-ion batteries powered by hydrogen and releases only water vapor.

The Coradia iLint 4000 is an alternative to diesel trains from Germany. Lower Saxony has already ordered 14 copies to Alstom and the results of the tests are successful, other Lands also adopt this new means of transport. According to information available, the tests will begin by the end of the year and the public opening is scheduled for December 2017.

A quiet and environmentally friendly process

Presented for the first time at InnoTrans Berlin, Ilint has a hydrogen tank on the roof and it works with huge lithium-ion batteries. The hydrail succeed to travel nearly 800 km / day and reach a maximum speed of 140 km / h. Furthermore, noise is limited because only the movement of the wheels and the air resistance produce sound.

The use of liquid hydrogen in the transport sector in the 1970s when NASA used it to propel his rockets. According to the details provided by Henri Poupart-Lafarge, CEO of Alstom Coradia iLint development lasted two years.
