So.cl: Microsoft Terminates Its Social Network

So.cl: Microsoft Terminates Its Social Network

Launched officially in 2011, So.cl was perceived as a potential competitor of Facebook and Google+.

However, the social network was initially intended for students before opening to the general public, in the manner of Facebook at its launch. So.cl even accepted a signup from a Facebook account and instead was inspired by the Pinterest style for visual content with the creation of video and photo collages.

Microsoft's social network will be officially closed on March 15, according to a Microsoft Research press release, after it never took off during its five-year existence.

So.cl, conceived in collaboration with the FUSE Labs team of Future Social Experiences Labs, did not succeed in attracting the public by its objective, which was notably "collaborative consumption, not communication". It must be said that between Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter or Instagram, competition is tough, even for the firm of Redmond.
