Hacking a smartphone with sound waves? It's possible

The smartphone piracy is an exercise that is full of surprises. And hackers do not lack ideas when it comes to taking control of your phone.
A new way to hack your smartphone has been discovered. It would be enough to use the sound waves. Surprising as it may seem, it is quite possible to take control of a device through sound waves. Researchers at the University of Michigan and the University of South Carolina in the United States have made this surprising discovery.

In their study, the researchers described how, initially, they took control of the tracker of a Fitbit watch through the loudspeaker of a smartphone. Kevin Fu, one of the researchers at the origin of the manipulation assimilates this discovery to the example of an opera singer who would break a glass by reaching a certain note.

Using the sound waves and the same process, one could not only take control of a smartphone or an activity tracker, but also that of a stand-alone vehicle. This discovery that highlights a new vulnerability has therefore added a new challenge in the field of cybersecurity.
