The first autonomous bus could see the day in China. The Internet search giant, Baidu, has announced plans for the construction of autonomous vehicles despite various legal constraints. Many technology companies are working on different concepts of self-driving automobile. China could be the first country to host the first autonomous bus thanks to Baidu.
International competition
Internet giant Baidu recently partnered with BMW and Microsoft to design the company's first autonomous car. Group CEO Robin Li, however, revealed the company's new plan to launch a stand-alone bus at the Wall Street Journal's D.Live conference. Baidu is cooperating with a major Chinese bus manufacturer to make its project a reality and the company plans to have the first model available by 2018.
China is taking the example of Singapore which has just launched various initiatives related to self-driving vehicles. The country has just launched its first cabins without drivers that allow users to reach a bus stop nearby. Singapore's Nanyang Technological University is also planning to launch an autonomous shuttle to facilitate the flow of students around the campus.
While Baidu is confident about the technology used to launch its stand-alone bus, the company nevertheless confirms that it faces various legal and regulatory obstacles. Baidu has yet to wait for the administrative authorization to market its self-driven buses.
