Imzy, a social network based on kindness

Imzy, a social network based on kindness

Designed by former employees of Reddit and Twitter, Imzy works for several months as a beta. After a round table organized by Index Ventures, the platform has collected $ 8 million and is now open to all.

About 6,000 members joined Imzy in six months

Like all social networks, the platform allows users to create communities based on common interests. However, they attach great importance to the goodness of each member and so banish contained pornographic or extremely violent characters. Before interacting with a group or community, the user should first join. To explain this policy, Lesley Brownlee compares the network to a restaurant: when you want to participate in a discussion, you must ask for permission or wait for an invitation.

Unlike most other networks, Imzy authorize its members to pay a small amount to moderators. With this strategy, the platform would succeed to operate without advertising and it would not be subject to the downward pressure to send more ads to users. For now, a minority of members used this option.

Survive, the main challenge of Imzy

Recently, the "alternative social networks" have multiplied, promoting other practices that existing giants. However, after the initial euphoria, few of them survived. So the challenge is important for Imzy. Indeed, the involvement of members decrease when their number increases and above all, ensure the sustainability of a model without advertising seems difficult.
