n 2015, Google entered into a partnership with the NGO, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), and the Californian startup Aclima. The aim was to raise awareness of environmental protection. The project now takes shape on Google Maps.
The application now provides a map of urban pollution with levels of nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide and carbon black. The data will also be available on the Google Earth Engine and will be used by researchers, environmentalists and citizens alike. For the moment, this type of mapping concerns only the city of Oakland, California. This feature could take some time before spreading to other locations. To draw the map, Google and Aclima have worked on 3 million measurements over nearly 22,530 km over the past year.
The collection method involves Aclima sensors embedded on Google StreetView cars. These air quality analysis systems will also be available in California buses, Ubers and Lyfts cars. Ultimately, these measures will provide more accurate data on urban pollution.
