Google announced yesterday a new version of its YouTube app called "YouTube Go" for India to fight against slow network connections. The project is part of the "next billion" Company program by which it aims to connect the next billion people of India to the Internet.
YouTube Go offers a range of features to make it easier for users to watch videos on slow networks. Chief among them is the ability to Go YouTube to share videos with friends. The "social" function uses the Wi-Fi Direct protocol for exchanging files, the company said in Mashable India. Go to YouTube, Google also seeks to improve off-functionality of YouTube. In the new application, people get a super low bandwidth video preview they want to download. The company says it also shares information on the amount of data consumed video. Go YouTube would be launched in India for Android users later this year. It would support several local Indian languages including Tamil and Marathi. Users can register for early access to YouTubeGo.com/signup. YouTube Go is faster, lighter and was built from the ground for the Indian market, according to Johanna Wright, vice president of product management YouTube yesterday at a press conference in New Delhi. The team spent time in rural India to understand the challenges that are faced with Internet access.
Wright said the company believes no matter who you are or where you come from, everyone should have the opportunity. The company said it has spent much time in Indian rural areas to understand the challenges that are faced in accessing the internet. You can not solve these problems by sitting in Silicon Valley, she said.
