The social network to the blue bird resumes its flight. After two years of virtual stagnation in its number of monthly users, Twitter has seduced nine million more people in the first three months of the year, according to financial results released on Wednesday. He had not convinced so many Internet users since the first quarter of 2015, two years ago.
A period of stagnation. Since the beginning of 2015, the social network founded by Jack Dorsey was no longer able to attract new users. On a quarterly basis, the number of monthly users grew only slightly (between two and five million). Twitter had even seen this figure falling to lose two million users in the fourth quarter of 2015. The arrival of nine million additional users, bringing to 328 million the number of monthly users of the social network offers a breath of air fresh. The Twitter action took more than 10% at the opening of the New York Stock Exchange.
The social network is multiplying initiatives. Some analysts want to see in these good results the first consequences of the decisions taken by Twitter for several months. Because to seduce new users, the company of Jack Dorsey put the doubles. In September 2016, it simplified the 140-character rule to no longer count images and mentions. In early March, it also introduced new measures to combat harassment. Before that, she had already changed the order of display of certain tweets to bring out the most relevant posts first.
Revenues are falling. However, all the LEDs are not yet green for the platform. From January to March, the Californian company has indeed seen its revenues decrease by 8% compared to the same period a year ago. Decrease was due to a decrease in revenues from advertising. It reported "only" 474 million dollars (about 435 million euros) to the social network, compared to 531 million dollars (about 488 million euros) in the first quarter of 2016. But the social network has And already warned that the growth of its revenues would remain "significantly" less than that of the users.
