Google Earth launches thematic tours

Google Earth launches thematic tours

Google Earth shows a new face after a two-year development to arrive at the latest version released on April 18th. If Google Maps consolidates its place in cartography, Google Earth intends to attract a wide audience with the introduction of "Explorer".

This feature offers a guided tour of certain regions of the globe with specific themes. Explorer is the result of cooperation between Google and partners such as the BBC, NASA, the Jane Goodall Institute, the Ocean Agency and the American television series "Sesame Street". Monuments listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site will be honored. The visitor can visit the Taj Mahal, the castles of the Loire or the Grand Canyon. Besides the visual aspect, the new functionality highlights information about the places visited. In a Tanzanian park, British scientist Jane Goodall will provide information on chimpanzee research, while in Afghanistan, the character of Muppet Zari will explain the problems encountered by the children of this country.

According to Rebecca Moore, manager of Google Earth, the fifty guided tours currently available will be reinforced as and when. It also stated that this feature had no commercial purpose. "What we want to do is encourage people to explore the world through this interactive educational experience. We see this as a way to connect cultures, "she explains.
