A fake WhatsApp app makes big mess

A fraudulent copy of a WhatsApp update application challenges Mountain View's quality control after it infected more than a million Android devices in a matter of days. Yet this is not the first time.

The WhatsApp messaging service is the most used in the world, with nearly a billion users. The name of the application has just been used by hackers to trap millions of Android users. The software hidden under the fake version of the app does little damage by displaying unwanted ads, for now. However, it is a risk because it may be able to download other software on the Android device, according to members of the forum Reddit who made the discovery.

In addition to Google's application store descriptions, there are few settings to differentiate the true from the wrong application. The logo used has a darker color than the original, in most cases. The number of downloads of the false version is also in the order of a thousand, while that of the original exceeds 1 billion. The Additional Information section of the real WhatsApp app also contains details about the company. Finally, comments can also reveal the different behaviors of the application.
