The Specter and Meltdown vulnerabilities, which affect almost all the processors of the last ten years, are still not completely filled. To counter the effects of Specter, Intel has released patches dedicated to processors 6th, 7th and 8th generations.
A firmware update for Skylake (6th generation), Kaby Lake (7th generation) and Coffee Lake (8th generation) architectures has just been released by Intel. Note in passing that this also applies to CPU Core X, Xeon Scalable and Xeon D. The good news is that it is possible to update your PC with a small program delivered by the manufacturer of the PC (without going through Windows Update, so). At HP, for example, you only need to use the Support Assistant software, which will download and install the appropriate update. Same thing at Lenovo with the Lenovo Vantage program for Windows 10, with Asus Manager for Asus machines, etc.
Recall that founders and publishers are trying to minimize the effects of Spectrum and Meltdown, sometimes to the detriment of the speed and stability of the system. Last January, a patch even resulted in an unwanted reboot on Broadwell and Haswell platforms. Most experts agree that the final resolution of these vulnerabilities will only pass through a new hardware architecture, and that the multiple software patches will never completely fill them. We hope that the new Cannon Lake processors, which should be released this year and have already been delivered to some manufacturers, will completely overcome this kind of fault.
