While the Xbox One S was released last August in its version 2 TB, it will have to wait a bit before purchasing the competitor: the PS4 Pro. But rest assured, you will not have to wait long. Sony's new console is announced for 10 November. But in the meantime, one wonders what are the innovations of each, as their strengths and weaknesses especially at the end of the holidays approach this year, which console to turn? Writing an update.
1. Two 4K compatible consoles and HDR
The display of an image in 4K (or UHD) is the main novelty of the PS4 and Xbox One Pro S. In this field, Sony and Microsoft are jockeying. Both consoles are capable of displaying an image in 3840 x 2160 pixels which is a good thing as long as one has the correct screen. Because without UHD TV, there is no real interest.
Both consoles can play back 4K videos, including those from broadcasters like Netflix or YouTube. Moreover, it is possible to view files stored and saved in the same resolution, although all encoding formats are not yet supported by the Xbox One S (even via the application Media player, which is more accurate let Movie & TV). In the case of the PS4, not yet really know what the formats supported for 4K.
Finally, they are able to take charge of the content HDR (High Dynamic Range). This technology can reproduce more detail in optimizing the management of contrast and colors. Clearly, you can enjoy a brighter image without saturating provided colorimetry.
2. And for games, what happens?
Like everything about the video, the two consoles are also capable of displaying 4K games. Goodbye pixels, it is a real leap forward for video game lovers the finest and most realistic possible. But that's where there's a catch:
- PS4 Pro supports native 4K coded games. There is no treatment required and the images displayed are really 3,840 x 2,160 pixels from the start.
- Xbox One S is itself unable to bear the games programmed in native 4K. In fact, it simply upscaling (that is to say larger image) games simply encoded in HD. And that makes a difference in size between the two consoles. In view of the first titles to images as Horizon Zero Dawn, Rise of the Tomb Raider or Spider-Man, there's something to be conquered. Finally, note that the console is dedicated only to owners of 4K displays. It also improves the titles available in 1080p. It will even let you choose the resolution and frequency: 1080p / 60 fps (normal graphics settings) or 1080p / 30 fps (high graphics settings).
3. A 4K Blu-Ray player? Yes, but only on the Xbox One S
Good point for the Microsoft console: the manufacturer of Redmond changed its Blu-Ray drive and opted for a model capable of supporting 4K Blu-Ray. In practice this makes the console Blu-Ray player 4K cheapest market. However, this is not the case of Sony, who made no effort and kept a classic Blu-Ray player. Some see it as a strategy to focus on streaming videos, to the detriment of 4K Blu-Ray. Still to download such files, it essential to have an Internet connection at 20 Mb / s minimum. To enjoy 4K video on a PS4 Pro, it is essential to be a subscriber VDSL or fiber.
4. To each his exclusives
Each of the two consoles available at its output a very substantial catalog. Xbox One S is 100% compatible with the Xbox One, and even supports nearly 200 games in the Xbox 360. As for the PS4 Pro, it naturally inherited the catalog of classical PS4. But on each console, there are also games that are not suited to competing.
Thus, on the Microsoft console, one can enjoy titles like Forza Horizon 3, Gears Of War 4, Recore or Crackdown 3.
Those of Sony exclusives are even more interesting, since we will be entitled to God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last Guardian, Batman: Arkham VR, Spider-Man or Resident Evil 7 (VR).
5. And virtual reality then we do not talk?
That's almost a year that Sony communicates its virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR. The device, which is still not out, should land in October and appear at a price of € 399.99. Again, this is a major asset which will provide the PS4 Pro compete.
For Xbox, meanwhile, continues to sulk virtual reality. Of course, Microsoft has always HoloLens (big glasses that work with holographic technology and not virtual reality). But the glasses are completely independent and are not intended to work with Microsoft's console.
6. So, which to choose?
If you have a 4K TV and want to make the most in video games, it's the PS4 Pro you. Nevertheless waiting to see how the console will really get by with native 4K games, especially because the computing power required is considerable and that its new GPUs could be a bit limited. However, if you are looking for a less powerful console in the games, but Blu-Ray compliant 4K and above all less expensive, turn the side of the Xbox One S. See you in two months for a final verdict.
